BBI Healthcare is an innovative and ambitious company that supplies novel diabetes care products to domestic and international markets.
BBI Healthcare's philosophy is to provide simple solutions for people who have diabetes, and products are created with the objective to ‘make life easier’ for people that need to carefully manage their condition. BBI’s products are available both on prescription through healthcare channels (GlucoGel, SensoCard), and for over the counter purchase (GlucoTabs).
Founded in April 2006, the company is a subsidiary of AIM-listed BBI Holdings plc which specialises in the development and manufacture of rapid test diagnostic products. BBI Healthcare was launched following the successful acquisition and re-launch of GlucoGel, an oral glucose gel that is frequently used by people with diabetes who are descending into a hypoglycaemic state, or ‘hypo’. GlucoGel is the UK’s leading glucose gel, and is prescribed by healthcare professionals as an emergency precaution for people susceptible to hypoglycaemia. Since the acquisition, BBI has put in place an effective sales and marketing strategy which supports the educational needs of over 2000 diabetes healthcare professionals in primary and secondary care.
In July 2006 BBI Healthcare acquired the rights to distribute the SensoCard Plus talking blood glucose meter. The meter is the UK’s only talking meter, and is recommended by healthcare professionals for people who require additional support when testing their blood glucose levels. There are 400,000 visually impaired diabetes patients in the UK, and many of these require third party assistance when testing their glucose levels. SensoCard could increase independence for such patients, and also provide clarity and ease of use for the elderly, patients new to diabetes testing, and children. In February 2007, BBI proudly launched a new initiative whereby patients receiving treatment via the NHS may be eligible for a free meter – a first for the field of visual impairment, where free of charge items are a rarity. The meter will launch in the US in autumn 2007.
BBI Healthcare also launched GlucoTabs, a tablet containing 4g of glucose which can be used by diabetes patients who may be experiencing symptoms of hypoglycaemia. BBI Healthcare identified the need for a tablet which provided a measured ‘dose’ of glucose, and came packaged in an easy-open, durable, refillable container. After securing the distribution rights to the product, BBI Healthcare has utilised its existing customer base of healthcare professionals, pharmacy retailers, and patients to achieve a successful UK product launch. GlucoTabs are available in ASDA pharmacy retail outlets, as well as the majority of independent retailers.
BBI's motivated team works with some of the leading names in diabetes care in the UK to try and improve treatment and education for people with diabetes. We are involved in a number of initiatives to ensure a consistent education for people with diabetes, particularly in areas relating to hypoglycaemia, and proactively work towards improvements in the way that diabetes care is communicated on a national scale.
